Bragging Time – Winning a Prize at the Wiki Loves Monuments Photo Contest

It’s time to braaaag! 🙂

Every September the Wikipedia community organizes a global photo challenge called “Wiki Loves Monuments”. It’s a huge photography competition – actually, it’s the hugest in the world, according to Guinness Book of Records.

Participants take pictures of local historical monuments and heritage sites in their region, and upload them to Wikimedia Commons. The aim of event is to highlight the heritage sites of the participating countries with the goal to encourage people to capture pictures of these monuments, and to put them under a free licence which can then be re-used not only in Wikipedia but everywhere by everyone.

This September the Wiki Loves Monuments photo contest was held in Slovenia too, organized by the Wikipedians of Slovenia user group, lead by dr. Jernej Polajnar, and supported by Intellectual Property Institute and the Ministry of Culture of Slovenia.

The closing event of WLM in Slovenia 2019

Well, to keep the stpry short – the Wiki Loves Monuments in Slovenia 2019 jury (Branimir Ritonja, photographer, owner of the STOLP photo gallery; Nina Grein, photographer; and Matjaž Zaplotnik, Wikipedian) decided that one of our kite aerial photos deserves an award!

Church of St. James, Lubljana. Kite aerial photo that won a prize at WLM2019 – part of the Ljubljana Old Town series.

The celebration was held in the lecture hall of the City Museum of Ljubljana; it was fun, pleasant, and informative. We gotto the stage and received a diploma and a special edition of Dornau: photographic album by Ksenija Kovacec Naglic; Jedert Vodopivec; Blanka Avguštin Florjanovic; Miran Kambic; Jelka Pirkovic; et al. – an exquisite book about the Dornava Mansion (that, incidentally, we took photos of from a kite!).

As one of the winners of the WLM in Slovenia our photo was selected for the international WLM 2019 competition. The results will be out in December – wish us luck! 😉

The prize and the diploma

We feel this award is a great incentive for all kite aerial photographers. KAP is a supreme photo technique; its natural, organic, gluten-free way of viewing the wonders of the world from the air, its analogue touch, its essential ingredient of luck makes it stand out. Try it: it is really rewarding – even in the literal sense of the word!

Big thanks to the jury, to dr.Jernej Polajnar and the Wikipedians of Slovenia, to all the participants in the WLM in Slovenia 2019 photo contest – and to all the supporters of this beautiful project, Wiki Loves Monuments.
